BLYTHE BRETT

SHOSTAKOVICH-MICHELANGELO SUITE

English Touring Opera - Online Season

A song cycle for bass voice and piano, considered Shostakovich's final symphony, setting Michelangelo's poetry to song. Throughout the piece we feel the parallels between the two artists, who both struggled with their sexuality and spirituality in very modern voices, respective of their times. In the voice of the singer/sculptor/poet we hear clearly the voice of the composer. Finding himself at odds with the popes and patrons on earth and with God in heaven, wrestling with desires that cannot be expressed openly or understood.
